I have just planted garlic for harvest next summer, and the directions said to add 2 to 3" of mulch. Leaves have not fallen here yet, and my grass clippings are full o seeds. I have several acres of freshly harvested soybeans...would gathering the leftovers from the soybean harvest, and mulching w/ that stuff be a viable alternative? Peace, Wayne

Wayne the idea of mulching garlic in winter, is so that the bed dosent dry out and it protects the garlic from the elements.

I would try it and see if it works. sounds good as long as there are not any weed seeds.

Don't use grass hay, I have had wheat/barely straw sprout in the bed and take over my garlic in yrs past.

I forgot to mention that I put a little manure ontop of the mulch.(it eventually gets worked into the soil,)

SoyBean Straw will reduce your PH greatly..It has the same PH as peat moss. It is great for increasing organic matter.

I don't usually worry about mulching them until the weather becomes reliably cold. Late November,December.

Wayne, I never mulch my garlic, in fact, I cant get rid of the garlic I have fast enough. Ive never had a problem with it freezing. I planted elephant garlic and it grows anywhere and the cloves are as big as your fist.
