My mom planted apple and peach trees 3 0r 4 years ago. They have not taken off due to lack of fertilize. When do they need to be fertilized and with what?

I used to use the spikes but found it too costly. Now I take a metal bar and punch holes in the ground about 6 inches deep around the drip line and fill that with 10-10-10. I have had good luck with this for a number of years. John
