Hi I recieved some of your tall corn in the exchange. I was really looking forward to planting BUT they flipped the hay field next to me and planted field corn (50 yd away) Should I still attempt to grow and hope the wind and pollination of the giant corn and field corn happen at a different time? Or just dont plant? Thanks Dave

Depends on what type of tall corn you got. If it's a tropical strain it should tassle very late in the season. If it tassles at the same time as the field corn it will definitely cross pollinate. Plant some of your seed and save some for next year.

Or, plant some now....wait 6 weeks, and plant the other half, there in Hell!!, MI!!! LOL (btw, I spent most of my adult life in Grand Rapids) I planted my seeds (from my lil Brothas in Colarada!!!) The Z'z brothers!!! I sorta just planted it, fed it a lil, watered it regularly...and it Zoomed!!! I would think that if you wanted controlled pollination, it could be done!!! Be inventive!!!

Pollenate it yourself and then bag the silk "pistilate" so that no further pollenation can occur. Basically the same thing we do with pumpkins.
You can find a tutorial on the process here: http://www.perrysgreenhouse.com/vbforum/showthread.php?80-Tips-for-growing-superb-sweet-corn-quot-corn-pollenation-quot&highlight=corn

G, it's easy...set up two 12' step ladders...place 2x4 in between...no problems!!!! Peace, Wayne PS...Pirate, I have two different growing areas...approx 500 yds. apart!!! One for eatin, one for giants!!! My eating area has done way better than the giant one!!!

You would only need to worry about cross pollenation if you were planning on saving seed. Cross pollenation should have no effect on the height of this years corn.

Duane, if tall corn was near the sweet corn, would it effect the taste of the sweet corn? Peace, Wayne

Yes it will affect the taste..You eat the seed of the corn.
