May 15 begins the tree borer season.
Lindane and Dursban are good choices for those who still can buy them or who have old inventory.
Bifenthrin products such as Onyx are excellent modern residuals: http://www.fmcprosolutions.com/Home/NewsEvents.aspx?itemId=453
Rescue treatments for those who miss this window include Bidrin injections from Maujet. <requires license>
Less invasive/injurious to beech/birch is Pentrabark with Safari. Follow these links: http://www.questproducts.us/
All imidacloprid products may also be "punched into" trees with Pentrabark.
Fall soil drenches of imidacloprid/Merit would have been effective too.
Leafminers and caterpillars are side benefits.
