As sunflowers grow some time the top will deform before the flower starts showing, and it will spilt in to multiple heads. This ussually puts the brakes on growth. I have a few every year that do it, but this year nearly all of mine did it. I have also noticed the same thing happening in other peoples gardens in my area this year. Does anyone have any idea what it may be, or what causes it? Thanks

I've grown Russian Mammoths and others before with great results, and every year there are "volunteer" plants that always go multiple heads. I think it has to do with cross pollination?

i believe it has a lot to do with the seed variety. Some of them are designed for multiple heads that keep blooming for a few weeks. others will only ever get one head. the taller varieties typically only get one in my experience.
