Some varieties grow just one head and are done, some varieties produce one head and then a bunch of little ones for the rest of the year. When did you plant it? Was it from seed? Or did you buy the plant? It may have bolted, sometimes the grow too early when they are stressed out or pot-bound.

Sometimes if the plant has been stressed, they will produce little button sized mature heads. If your plant is small and has a head already I would venture to guess that is what happened to yours. Hopefully that is not the case with yours. The head should develop fairly rapidly once it starts if it doesn't, you can cut it , and you should get many smaller side shoot heads from the plant. Also a young growing head will have tight buds, if the buds are large, chances are it is done growing and will soon be flowering.

They love the cool weather! We start ours right before winter and have the best heads right about Christmas time. If there's a hot spell somewhere in that time frame,,,,,,,,,,,, they will flower way to early.

Good luck pizza!

I like the fall crop better too. Mine go in the ground at the beginning of August The cabbage butterflies are worse here in the fall and late summer though. I will try growing a crop under row covers this year.

I agree with Wiz...cut it. The last time I grew mine I waited too long and a lot of the plants energy went into the main head instead of the side ones.
