Rookie, what zone are you in and what is your weather like? How much rain? I have so many favorites that I could recommend, but CA seems so foreign to me I don't want to give any bad advice.

Kwanzan Cherry, Yoshino cherry, all flowering and semi dwarf. You could try an almond tree, lots of those in your state. All in one almond tree gets 15 feet tops. Then you'd have nuts in the fall.

I'll second the Kwanzan and Yoshino Cherry trees. Another idea is the Sugar Maple...or the Canadian Cherry,I can't recall the "real" name...but it is has redish leaves most of the year.

Old rookie, Are you out on the bay side or back in the canyon? Is there a hot micro cliamate or the usual morning marine layer? Do you experience a lot of sun, or is it often shady? Most of these folks from across the country probably are not aware of the goofy micro climates of the Bay Area. Also, do you want a tree that holds its leaves thru the fall and winter?

Thanx for all your replys;
Mr. Nor cal;I don't live in the canyon part of niles, I am about 10 miles from the bay part;if there is overcast it only last for an hour or so in the mornings;then its sun all day; As far as a tree with with leaves it doesn't matter as long as it is a pretty tree thanx

I like the Dogwood tree by my drive (Not sure of exact type). It has nice white flowers in the spring, foliage turns red in fall and has red fruit. It's easily trimmed and even in winter it has good character and doesn't get too big.
