my onions are looking terrible. The leaves drying up and the center of the leaves are turning brown. Since we have the triple crown contest, i figure a small onion is better than no onion. When I weigh my best one..what is the requirement for foliage removal etc. My best one is really tall before the leaves start to show. How much do I need to cut away?

The foliage must be trimmed off at or below the first green leaf joint. Roots must also be removed. The onion must be clean dry and sound. World record shows use a special tube collar ( 3 inch(7.5cm) Dia x 5 inch (12.5cm) long placed over the neck to determine where it is cut. FYI.. When removing the roots do not damage the basal plate or the onion cannot be replanted for seed. I got this from my judges rule book put together by Dean Baker for AZGPG contest use. The Azgpg website has a list of contest rules per vegetable categories. If they are not all listed shoot myself or Dean an email.

thanks sandkin,
I am wondering if i should cut a piece of pvc pipe to check future ones. This one certainly won't be WR. It is hanging on, but still not looking good.
