I have a miniature poodle and I’ve noticed that a lot of Poodle people get bent out of shape about Border Collies being ranked as the most intelligent breed. Let’s not have a meta discussion about that. Let’s just talk about what dogs we have had in our lives who impressed us with their brains.
One of my pit bulls, Jimi, really impresses me with his problem solving. For example: about a week ago, I was sitting on the couch, watching the local news with my 5 dogs and my friend’s dog. Jimi wanted to sit in my lap, where Skye was. He hopped off the couch, did a big stretch, and barked like he wanted to go out. I said “You wanna go outside?” and he gave his affirmative facial expression and turned towards the door. This caused Skye to get out of my lap and walk towards the door like it was time to go outside. Jimi immediately hopped into the spot that Skye had just vacated and curled up in my lap. It was a trick!

The wife and I got these for each other for Christmas ...(for our border collie)....took about 20 min to learn 4 buttons. Highly recommend. You might be surprised what yer dog says “no” too. Lol. https://youtu.be/KYysVTJqFto

We have had a lot of dogs over the years and one was a poodle, very smart dog. But by far the smartest were two terriers that we had on different occasions. Fiercely loyal and you didn’t need to call them twice. If we were outside having a fire, the other dogs would be looking for a scrap of food while the terrier would be a short distance away guarding.

Smartest all around dog I had was an Australian cattle dog. He literally understood English with no training. He also had an insane amount of drive. A bunch of us used to do 12 mile float trips in canoes regularly. My good friend would always bring his two duck hunting labs, and I would bring the cattle dog. My dog would jump out of the canoe 100 feet in and not get out of the water until we got out to camp 12 miles later. The hunting labs would last 7 miles throughout.
Smartest in terms of home protection is the young Shepherd we have now. Bad side of that is he is almost more of a liability with visitors.

I,ve had a miniature schnauzer and a golden ret/lab neither were overly smart in my opinion, but were friendly. My sister in law has had 5 Dalmatians and one Jack Russel. Jake was smarter than all Dalmatians put together. In my opinion. Jim

I know some dog breeds are considered more intelligent but a lot has to do with the individual. My cousins had a lab they used as a hunting dog. It was an absolute machine in the field and on the water, hardly ever left a bird unflushed or unretrieved. It could climb up a ladder on the boat and many other things. Now I don't know if that just means its highly trainable or highly intelligent.

Reeds, agreed on the individual part. Have seen a great variety within breeds.

We recently got a McNab puppy. She is 10 weeks old & is crazy smart. Housebroken, responds to all of the basic commands, knows our routines, and seems to understand most things we tell her. She may not always do what we tell her to do, but we are sure she understands pretty much everything. We have only had her for 2.5 weeks.
