With Bitcoin in a bit of a meltdown this morning it is interesting to note that Bitcoin is currently consuming approximately .5% of the entire energy output of the planet which is more than the entire country of Switzerland. For those interested in saving the planet, shutting this monstrosity down would seem like a good place to start.

Can anybody even show me a phsical coin? Hard to believe that somebody dreams up a non existing item and it can consume so much energy and people are willing to pay so much money for it. Not to be confused with blockchain.

I have a question about Bitcoin. A friend of my daughter bought a Bitcoin for $5,000. Cdn. approx 2 yrs ago. Can she now buy $50,000. worth of goods or is it still $5,000. Jim

Bitcoin has always seemed pretty fishy to me. It has very limited liquidity and is backed by nothing. It get the feeling that it will crash at some point and a lot of people will have lost a lot of money. Then again, some people have done very well with it on its way up.

Is there a way to cash out? I have a hard time believing that my bank would do a currency conversion if I transferred $50,000 of bitcoin into my checking account.

26 West. ---She has to find a reputable bitcoin exchange to sell it on. The one she used to buy it should be able to sell it. What profit she sells it for is taxable but I would be willing to bet that she would not be allowed a tax write off if there was a loss.
