I too am 70 years old now & this fellow is inspirational to me. I have been running wind sprints for the last several months but since yesterday I am on a long pause as I pulled my right quadracep while running & must give it sufficient time to heal. Michael Kish's time was even faster then any of the 65 year old runners in the previous race !

I saw this, he was hauling ass. Good for him to keep up with his health. Wonder what his keys to keeping in that good of shape? There is no one size fits all diet or workout program for all. Me personally, I have all but cut sugar completely from my diet, and I feel the best I have in a long time at 44.

i ran the nebreaska state games in about 2004....100 meters at 54 years old....did ok.........time 12.5 something for 3rd place if i remember correctly

Thats pretty fast Mattman what did you run for the 100 when you were younger. Luke I admire you for giving up sugar, sooner or later I may do the same thing. Did you have to give up beer too? I think that would be harder for me than the sugar LOL

Big Moon, I drink whiskey 99% of the time now or some vodka. I will drink a few beers here and there and stick to light, lower sugar beers. No craft. I also gave up ketchup which has been very tough. I use a sugar free bbq sauce as main condiment now (G Hughes). It’s also a good way to slim down fast along with keeping blood sugar under control.

Fad diets are a thing of the past, lifestyle changes that cater to the individual is better. This 70 year old man in the video clearly has it figured out!

Luke, I’ve done the same thing with sugar, have tried to completely eliminate. High fasting glucose number here for this 59 year old that my Doctor didn’t like. Cut sugar, cut carbs and that number is now fixed.

I miss potato the most!! Great tip on the BBQ sauce, thanks.

Big Moon, fructose & alcohol are both digested in the liver & both have negative effects on the liver & cause fatty liver disease. I haven't banned myself from alcohol completely or from sugar either. But I am very hesitant to consume either of them. It is difficult not to eat a piece of my own birthday cake or have a alcoholic drink on a special occasion, so there are always exceptions to the rules I strive to live by. But I feel the better I do with my diet the better I will feel & the more quality years I will have left.

NSB, potatoes are a complex card that break down slowly and don't raise blood sugar too much for most folks. Yams are even better as they contain high fiber & so have a even lower glycemic index. Starchy foods aren't necessarily bad for diabetics but I have to admit they do keep me fatter than I want to be, but I am about 70 pounds lighter than I used to be. Great nutrition is so very important to our health. I have spent the past several years refining my diet & finding out what works for me to keep me feeling my best. Take care of yourself. No one else is going to do it for you.

Same here Glenn, I have diabetes in the family, but have always been in pretty good shape. My fasting glucose numbers have been high for years now too. Cutting sugar and carbs except vegetables\fiber has really helped that. I seem to be more insulin tolerant and there aren’t insulin dumps chasing bloodstream glucose anymore like there used to be. This is just what has worked for me.

Great topic, I cut out sugar in my early twenties and I try to eat whole foods as much as possible. A typical breakfast for me is a half pound of fish, chicken, eggs and if I'm in the mood a sweet potato. Today I had oatmeal and two pork chops for breakfast, two ingredients if you leave out the BBQ sauce.
Do I cheat? Absolutely, I eat what I want when I want and I drink way too much wine, but at 58 I feel like I'm 30. Maybe slower but I still run, play basketball and keep up with two teenagers....most of the time. Hitting the weights this week, my grandson is catching up! Read labels and tune in to what works for you. Both my wife and I love to cook which helps. Today I started cooking at 4 and by 5 we had home made chicken soup, air fried chicken and BBQ salmon. Granted, I'm retired and have the time. I appreciate how hard it can be for working families.

Matt, we ( grand kids ) just finished regionals track and field for age groups between 12 and 18. Your 12.5 would have advanced you to the provincials! I'm a little jealous to say the least.

"Take care of yourself. No one else is going to do it for you." Very True! Congrats to all you guys for taking such good care of yourselves. We should strive to be proactive with our health and not just look for a pill or quick fix like it seems most people are looking to do.

John, it seems you are describing my wife. She seems to think all can be fixed with pills. She is overweight, diabetic, & generally unhealthy. No matter how hard I try she refuses to take care of herself. I fear far too many folks are the same as she is. I am all about my health since I was diagnosed with terminal cancer about 12 years back. And I am feeling wonderfully well with little pain or physical problems. I hope to carry on for a long time.

Has anyone tried the Honeysuckle yellow potato that has a low glycemic index and it is very tasty. There are more maybe even lower glycemic potatoes as research is being done to find the best varieties.
Yacon (ground apple plus several other names) might be of interest to some of you guys for its' qualities that have been studied including insulin/glucose. Can be grown yourself. I have not grown it yet but it is on my grow list for the future just as an interesting different thing to grow.

Andy, in my mind I feel I know 3 negative things about meat & all were life changing for me in a very bad way. If meat completely agrees with you that is wonderful. Personally I fear eating much of it. #1 : I ate a lot of meat for most of my life. A bit over 12 years ago I was diagnosed with terminal oral cancer. That is anecdotal I know but it has to come from somewhere. Probably all the processed foods I used to eat had a lot to do with it. Especially sugars & seed oils. But scientific studies have shown cancer becomes more likely as we up the percentage of animal protein in our diets. #2: Inflammation - I have worked hard with my hands all my life & as a result I got a pretty good case of arthritis in my hands & shoulders that pained me so much I often had trouble sleeping (a very bad thing in my world). After my cancer treatment and slowly changing my diet, my arthritis slowly went away. Foods can usually be classed as inflammatory or anti inflammatory & I have adopted a highly anti inflammatory diet. As a result I have no more pain today than I did when I was a teenager. Animal proteins are considered inflammatory. #3: My blood pressure has tended high most of my life. After slow changes to a mostly all fresh whole fruit, vegetables, roots & mushrooms diet my blood pressure normalized & it remains good. So my core belief is the more meat or other animal products I include in my diet the more likely my pain will return, my blood pressure will go back up & ultimately that my stage 4 cancer will return & finish me off. Just my feelings.

John, I am just glad to be here if you know what I mean. After my diagnosis & for the following several years I didn't expect to live long because that is what the doctors told me. But I feel I am a blessed man as I have found a way to add quality years to my life. Today I don't go to doctors, I don't take prescription medicines & I almost feel guilty as I see folks my age or younger who are very sick & dying. Good health is available to almost anyone who is willing to pursue it. Take care of yourself my old friend.

I gave up on being a competitive runner after an itb band problem. But his success is inspiring, it shows the stars can line up at any age... provided a person can somehow put their bad decisions and misfortunes aside.

My post suggests that I eat a lot of meat. I would replace "meat" with protein. We have all but eliminated beef from our diet, although I do make pork and beef meat balls once or twice a month. Fish, chicken and eggs make the bulk of our protein. I'll emphasize whole foods. After posting, I'm going to have two hard boiled eggs and a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, two ingredients. I couldn't agree more about the importance of inflammation and the negative affects on the body.
My wife's grandfather lived to 95 years old. He worked in the woods all his life. He started each day with a shot of scotch and a good breakfast. No junk food, no dieting, nothing in excess. He didn't even take any meds, although that generation didn't complain about aches and pains.

In a perfect world my diet would be entirely plant based. I'm slowly heading in that direction but not there yet.
