In my area, my pumpkin will see no rain, so do I really need to go with mill fabric, or can I just go with plywood
and a couple inches of sand on top? Suggestions?

I am too cheap to plunk down $40 for Mill fabric so I got a roll of Bug screen like what covers your windows for $5 at Home Depot. I doubled it over and put sand on top of it. It seems like that should keep the critters out keep the weeds down and drain water away.

if your using plywood theres no reason to put sand underneath, id be afraid of moisture building under the fruit and rotting the bottom?
before mill fabric we used to use a piece of plywood with a piece of plastic laid over the wood to create a smooth surface. we also put the plywood at a slight downward angle so water would run off.

What would happen if you just put a pallet down then put a piece of plywood on that, could that work?

yes it would if you were only expecting a pumpkin that was smaller in circ than a pallet.im hoping for bigger things.
but, if need be and you were growing on a pallet im sure sides could be built up if ya get a great one.
anything is possible crash.go for it.
