I see many numbers before names like 1818 Bryson... I am new to growing and purchased my seeds from Home Depot this year. Could someone explain these names and numbers. Also let me know if I need to get different seeds. So far I have a 143 lbs. Pumpkin, but would like to get better results next year. Thanks

Using your example (1818.5 Bryson)

That would mean the seed came from an 1818 Lb. Pumpkin grown by a grower whose name is Jim Bryson (the current World Record holder)

The naming goes this way so that you can trace the genetics continuing with your 1818.5 Bryson - if you look it up you will find it is usually shown as 1818.5 Bryson 2011 (1404 Bryson x 1618 Bryson)

Which would tell you that the seed is from the 1818 Bryson pumpkin which was grown on a plant grown from a seed from the 1404 Bryson (Female plant) germinated using pollen of a male flower off of a plant grown from a seed out of the 1618 Bryson (Male Plant)

A few other terms :

Self -- means both Female and Male flower are from the same plant

Sib -- means Female and Male are from same pumpkin but seperate plants using 2 different seeds from the same pumpkin

Open -- Means Male flower donor is unknown ( pollination was done by Bees etc. so could be any locally grown plant)

Get your seeds from here, at the Seed Exchange on the menu board. They are the best in the world. In late fall winter growers offer seeds for free, you send them a Self Addressed Stamped Bubble Envelope (SESBE)they fill it and mail it back to you. Here are a few good sites to look at genetics, history of what that seed has done.

OK...new spin on the male vs. female growers. I am a second year FEMALE grower. Last year my husband thought I was crazy UNTIL my pumpkin took off. Then, it became HIS pumpkin to anyone who would listen!!!! Now we are both nuts about our patch and our 3 "kids". Not for the pros to worry, but it is just fun!!!!
