Hi there. I am a novice at gardening and growing pumpkins.

This is my third year growing pumpkins.

last year I grew regular pumpkin seeds from a packet I purchased at target. I grew an 87 pound pumpkin with little problems

This year I got Giant pumpkin seeds. I planted 3 seeds. Off the bat I admit to making a series of mistakes.
1. I did not get the soil ready this year.
2. I did not give these seeds room to grow. all three plants have overtaken 900 square feet... choking out tomato plants etc.

I fertilize weekly with miracle grow spray. I also use Alaska Gal. Alaska Fish Fertilizer.

Along the vine of one of my plants mid way down the vine to the end the leaves started to turn yellow. Am I over fertilizing, do I have a fungus, or Is my soil lacking nitrogen? I appreciate any kind of help. I would really like to break 100 pounds this year and If I lose my vines I will be crushed. :/

just to venture a guess......svb....squash vine bores......they lay eggs on the vine.....eggs hatch and the larva borrows into the vine.....game over

I got the same thing last year on my 1362 Vanhoutte. All I can say is destroy the plant & go fishing.It's not curable, of that I'm sure.

That looks a lot like a problem we get, a root rot disease. Possibly pythium. When you see it all on one vine like yours, I would start checking to see if the vine roots are rotting off. If that is the problem, there are things do to prevent it next year. Don't over water. Improve soil drainage; we dug drainage ditches and raised up the growing beds. Plant a fall cover crop of brassicas, either dwarf essex rape or groundhog radish as they suppress soil diseases. Use either alliette or agri-fos systemic fungicide. Use products with beneficial bacteria, like Jobes organics or Espoma fertilizers or Biota Max. Some growers use Companion biological fungicide with good success. Once the problem shows up I have been unable to cure it but it can be prevented.

I don't want to tell you this but I'm quite sure its yellow vine decline. You can look at my 2010 diary, starting in July there will be a few scattered pics of different stages. Its terminal. If you have other plants, pull this one and keep your fingers crossed that the others haven't been infected. Spray ASAP for squash bugs and stay on top of them.

Thank you. I'll yank the plant immediately and spray fungicide on my other two vines. I think they may also be infected. This is very depressing. I guess I will just have to look forward to next year.....
