Smelled something in my patch yesterday and upon inspection noticed quite a bit of rot from a few secondaries and leaves at the stump... Picture here is after I cut away and dug out all the rot and mush and after I sulfured it. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=185153
Anyone else had experience with this? What did you do? Is sulfur the right move? What about that pruning sealer from lowes? I gotta go get some more sulfur today anyway. Just trying to figure out what else needs to be done to save this stump.

Just read on Joseph's post that the pruning sealer is a bad idea. So that still leaves the question...sulfur only?...maybe potassium bicarbonate? And obviously keep it shielded from water now.

Keep it dry and add a fan to help dry it out.

In my experience, if there was enough rot that it got into the center of the vine, you will have to cut off the affected part of the plant eventually. Keep a close eye on it in the coming days, it can spread quickly and then you will end up losing even more of the plant. It hurts to chop off a big part of the plant but the alternative is usually worse.

better to cut the main and remove the rotted stump and sides then allowing it to continue.cut the main until you have good solid piece of the main.

sounds like its to far gone for drilling and flushing.to bad you did not see this condition sooner.

yes sulfer powder works well. we like to use it as a powdered bath on all our pumpkin stems. keeps them healthy and also we expose the stems to the sun.this is another area where many growers end up losing their pumpkins.
