I'm not really a new grower but I don't have the answer to this question...I have been keeping the pumpkin covered with an orange fabric table cloth day and nite and even today as we are finally getting some rain,and it is soaked. I wonder if this is bad...or maybe good,or neither...and could I substitute plastic as long as it wasn't the sticky wrap kind...and even if it was...would that be bad? any thoughts, experiences?

Don't use plastic....with high heat your better off useing a plain white sheet. If it get wet then dry it off or use a canopy style cover similar to a hoophouse. Just something to hade the pumpkin. I try to keep my fruits as cool a possible the season stress these plants and fruits enough throughout the season.

no plastic unless your only putting it over the fruit to keep it dry during a rain storm.fruit needs to breath .
we cover with large white table cloths and they stay on day and night-rain or shine. in sept once the nights get cold we alsos add blankets to keep the fruit warm and growing.

I covered with tyvek one year and it promotes skin rot and when the fruit cracks they don't dry and heal...lesson learned...

I'm using 3-4ml plastic tents.
I expand the tents as the fruit grows.
The plastic not only keeps the fruit dry, but the thick white plastic seems to filter the sun enough to protect new leaf growth on the really Hot sunny days.
I assume it's doing the same for the fruit.

Because it Does let in some sun it warms the fruit to promote growth.

Probably more work than White sheets, but I seem to have a problem with fruit getting wet and rotting.
