Can I use 3 2X8's instead of 3 4x4's?
Thanks.

Not really you need a bit of wood depth for side to side stability. The 2x8s will bend in the middle which limits the weight capacity

I couldn't find 16 ft 4X4s last fall so I bought six 16 ft 2X4s and fastened them together with screws to make 4X4s. It lifted my 972.5 okay but there was some bending. Don't know how much heavier it could lift. Here is a pic. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=171990

If you have woods in your area go find three pine trees and use those. Ceaper then 4x4's.

Thanks for your feedback. Bought 3 4x4's. Saturday is a harvest moon. We are having a harvest party!
