Recently preparing a pumpkin for Halloween I discovered several of the seeds inside that were sprouting. Should seeds with any sign of root sprouting be discarded for future use?

Yep - once they start to germinate there is no stopping them, so unless you plan to grow them out they should be discarded. ( good part is at least you know the others that have not started to sprout should be mature so that they will sprout when planted.)

Thanks for your help and information. I sort of expected that to be the case but wanted to ask "the pros" for your opinion. This pumpkin was in a yard display that was exposed somewhat to sun and warm temps this past week which may have contributed to the sprouting. I have rinsed and am presently beginning to dry the remaining seeds and will watch them to see if they continue to sprout. Thanks again and I hope all stay safe with the upcoming "historic" storm.
