Why does this happen/how can I prevent it from happening to my plants?

Farming- a bunch of catastrophies that result in a lifestyle

i'm new to growing these big guys, but in my field pumpkins last year I had this happen on a plant that was growing a super over sized howden, seemed to correspond with feeding them....I just paint the split with daconil and a paint brush, then put a zip tie around the split, has worked in years past to keep that area from rotting or breaking further. that howden was 83 pounds....freak.
