Hi there. My first attempt at growing one of these... My plant seems healthy enough, but it is not growing very well. A couple of questions: 1. Why wouldn't my plant be growing very big? (I think that it is approximately 8 ft with only 2 secondary vines starting to grow...??) 2. The first pumpkin has set at 5 ft on the vine. Is this far enough out? (I pollinated it only because I only have one plant, and figured I'd try to pollinate just in case nothing else grew....)
This was a last minute adventure (and I'm thinking that the fact that I didn't prep patch might be reason for plant not growing very large??) Thanks for any advice.

with out seeing it, My first guess would be not enough of a root system, second would be sun.

Jess - have you had alot of rain - that is my problem this year and my plants are smaller than usual.
How do the leaves look - are they dark green or more of an olive green or even yellowish from too much water.
Curt is correct about the seed - some seeds give you giant aggressive plants while others are slow growing that never get very large even though they are planted under the identical environment.
I did pollinate at 6 feet on the main vine this year and will keep it since nothing else set.

Well - I got the seed from a local nursery... so I don't know much about the seed, except that it said Giant Atlantic pumpkin... (AND that it has totally caught my imagination--and now I know that next year, I'll be excited to try growing a few plants...and will prepare for this!) The leaves are dark green...and we've had lots of sunshine....so maybe it is the seed...also, it could be roots (as I really didn't prepare a big area)....the pumpkin is not growing very quickly...only at 16 inches 14 days after pollination.... Should I just fertilize w/ 20 20 20 now? There are a couple more females a couple of ft out....but I will likely stick with the pumpkin at 5 ft - and see what happens.... Thanks for the feedback...
