Noticed a plant wilting and it died. Couple days later a second. On third plant noticed a hole and found the same on the last ones that died. Treated with insecticide "Seven". Opened up the root on the third wilted plant and it was filled with 10+ grub like worms. White in color with a small black head. Bored into the main stalk and living and eating from the inside out. Seven didn't seem to work any advice on how to kill them before my other plants die? Thanks in advance.

A systemic insecticide...Merit 75...there are others that work just as good but get it on asap.

I agree you have squash vine borers and merit 75wp is what you need. Get a real good contact insecticide like bifenthrin as well to keep future invasions controlled. Physically remove the borers you can see by cutting and extracting.

Although not as severe as yours, I had a similar infestation two years ago and then again last year. I moved the entire patch to a different location and haven't had any problems. I suggest leaving that ground unplanted for a year. Maybe turn the soil and treat with insecticides as well.

BTW, Neem oil really helped as well. I had some bugs early on and nothing at all after one application.

Thanks for all the replies. No one local carried what was suggested, so I went down to the local nursery. I picked up Orthodox Bug B Gon systemic insect killer and Hi-Yield Spreader Sticker. Coated the top and bottom of all leaves. Seems to be working. thanks again

Bet you if you went looking for Bayer Tree and Shrub...you would have found it. Find out what the active ingredient is before you go looking next time.

What I was trying to say in the post above is some of the chemicals pumpkin growers use here are not available to the general public with out a license. Although they are available under other names and lower concentrations, which are just as effective.

Linus, is what I purchased not very effective. I am sure I can find what you suggest. Active ingredient in the Orthodox I purchased is Acetaniprid.

Acetamiprid will work as it is a contact insecticide. The issue is you are not going to contact a larvae inside a vine. A systemic treats the plant so as it is eaten the pest eats the poison.

I just purchased some bayer tree and shrub iv seen some leaves dying and heavy flaging on my plant, so vine borers are a concern. I was wondering how much to use on a plant thats around 25x20?
