Hi, this might once again be a very obvious and simple question but here goes.
Say i had an area roughly 800 sq feet, when plating the pumpkin, do you generally plant in right in the center of the patch and train the vines to move across the patch, or do you plant it on the outside and train the center vines to move across the patch?
Any information is greatly appreciated.
Cheers.
Peter.

It depends on your conditions. I plant in the center and go out. Because that is where the morning sun is.

In case of a 800 sqft patch I would set two plants in the centre (back-to-back) growing their main vines into opposite directions. If the patch is surrounded by some lawn area or something else which could get covered by the vines the plants could then grow even larger than the 800 sqft patch. You would make best use out of your patch soil (the two central plants will root through the entire patch) and you could grow two plants which are much larger than 400 sqft each.

The Main vine will go in one direction so it doesn't make sense to plant in the middle of the patch if you are only planting one plant. The roots will go backward some so don't put it right on the edge of the patch. If you go about 5 feet off the edge you will give the roots plenty of room and you can fill up that space with tertiaries running back off of the first two laterals toward the edge of the patch. If you are doing two plants plant them back to back in the center like Linus said.

Cheers, yes forgot to mention that it would only be for the one plant.
I was thinking that the plant had two main vines, am I wrong here, it only has one main vine?
I kind of want to keep the plant confined to the 800sqft area, thought two plants might get a bit crowded and the plant size would be a tad restricted.
But interested to know about if the plant only has one main vive or two?
All information is always appreciated.
Cheers

I plant 5' from the edge and train the secondaries to grow backwards a bit. I find the farther apart the secondaries are, the larger the leaves become to fill the space. Most growers train their plants to have only 1 main vine.

Cheers, appreciated, will set it up like that and run with just the one main vine.
Appreciated.
