our season is just beginning down here, and i have read that a lot of growers use a milk and water solution to help with
powdery mildew.my plants are only about one to two foot long, and just starting to look really good;when should i start spraying to try to stop mildew occurring ???

This season we started spraying after pumpkin set... Not sure about down unda though...pm might be different where yer at...maybe start when the plant is 10ft long?.. Can't hurt... It's the only thing we will spray in direct sunlight ...needs the sun to make it work right, I think...(clean tank before spraying)...Good luck..

A few questions for you.
How's the overnight humidity? If the leaves are dry, you should be fine for a while. PM likes wet conditions.

Anything else growing in the vicinity & have it?
Is the plant healthy?
Have you ever used compost tea?

There are lots of things to spray - including sodium bicarbonate that are cheap and easy.

thanks porkchop, i'll start spraying when they get a bit bigger. there's a dairy just down the road, to get some full cream milk;
to ceis 70= the weather man reckons we are going to have a hot dry summer, but i have a new patch this year' with overhead watering under hale netting, that might cause a bit of humidity.there is nothing else growing near the patch.and i will look into what else i can spray;

I found a good way to get rid of powdery mildew who is to spray hydrogen peroxide and on the leaves like a 10% strength it will kill the white film knock it down spray both sides of the leafs and then come back after you rinse the leafs off come back and spray calcium combined with amino acids in Tim's Dunkels product Uncke Dunkels or in Mark Special Tea that allows calcium uptake through the leaf and strong calcium uptake will slow down the pottery mildew tried this just recently it works really well.stops the PM progression 100%

I did this three weeks ago and it works well progression is at stand , still no progression ever sense .and the weather has been high 70s and nights in the 50s and 60s warm humid weather for the past 2 to 3 weeks ideal conditions for powdery mildew

thanks for that bubba, i will see what i can get down here.
we wouldn't be able to get ""uncle duncles "" or marks special tea, but i'll do some homework. i wouldn't want anything to happen to my 1947.i just want to be ready if it does happen, but i will try to prevent any problems.

I used Mancozeb Plus, you can get it at most places and has worked pretty well for me last year on my plants.

Caveman,
Some of the best advice I got to minimize PM was from Mr. Wallace,
"Do not put the plant to bed wet"
Make sure you allow enough daylight for it to dry before sunset.

It's best to Prevent it using products like Eagle 20 or a similar product. If you do get it Milstop will wipe it out fast.
