I know that most of you use this. How so though? Till it in or around the sides of the patch?

I don't know how hard it is to till in a bear, you make want to quarter it first.
but if your wanting the insect protection provided by Bayer tree and shrub use a concentrated product containing Imidacloprid goes by brand name MERIT 75 but there are much cheaper generic products.
With merit you drench the mixture down the main and around the stump area of the plant, its a systemic product best absorbed through the roots.

I don't know what is the active ingredient in Bauer tree and shrub but when I used Bonid tree and shrub insecticide I used the shrub dosage. And it worked well. The active ingredient was imdicloprid.

Bayer tree and shrub is fine. Here is a repost of a nice thread that Don Young posted.
