we have a new member, who is having trouble with his first attempt. he say's the plant is going great and looks really good; he has worked up his ground, and says the dirt is good; his main is about 12 to 15 foot out, he has had a couple of female flowers come on, only to just frizzle up and drop off, before the flower opens, also there is only 1 or 2 male flowers on the whole plant. could any one help this keen new grower???

How Hot is it? Adequate moisture? Are the leaves flagging? Worse case scenario is genetics related. Please share more info

First guess is he needs phosphorus. Second guess is he didn't do a soil test to find out what the soil is lacking to grow Atlantic Giants. There are several nutrients that work with phosphorus to produce flowers.

He may also have fertilized with too much nitrogen.

hi wizz, and steve; it is pretty hot around here at the moment, but his temperature is pretty much the same as it is here, and i havn't had any trouble like that.the plant itself is looking really good and healthy; he is about 6 hours drive away from me, and i havn't seen the plant. but he reckons it looks good. it could be too much nitrogen, and i thought it might need some liquid potash; the ground is apparently wet enough. but no, i don't think he had a soil test done; the plant he is growing is a 1588- glasier, so i doubt there would be any problem with the seed; he is a very keen new grower, and i would like to help him if i can;;;thank you for your advice.

Generally speaking for me the first 1 or 2 females don't open. Usually the first one I can get to take is 12' out on the vine. I do generally get males about 1 week before females tho. Not time to panic and do anything rash yet. I'm with Steve on this one.

put shade over the females as they show up on the main as it could be heat stress,tell him no fertilizer and even watering...time will tell whether its stress or genetic

Im with VT Steve, too much nitrogen will cause aborts. The plant wants to keep vining when excess nitrogen is available and will abort early fruit as it transitions to the fruiting stage.

Too wet conditions will cause females to not open as well.
