Ohio.. The Good Part

When setting up a growing area, has the subject of underground drainage been talked about? Tiles or maybe pvc??

I had my old patch on top of 2 drain tiles... worked great I could water a ton and excess would run out.. but know the new place is not set up like that yet

We have a drainage problem in our community garden plots. I am thinking of posting a photo in my diary of every time it rains. The flooding is pretty bad. The park district refuses to consider drainage, so many gardeners have walked away from their rental mid season. We have amended our plots every other year with aged manure, but two of the six still hold alot of water. I am considering tillage radish this year. I am glad to see this topic, but it would be great to hear some ideas for people who might not own the plots and need a temporary seasonal resolution.
thanks!!

Goat if they wont let you put pvc or tile underneath then you have to keep adding every year to effectively raise the beds.Once you get 9 to 12 inches above grade you'll have good drainage through all but extreme wet conditions. You can use topsoil, sand and a reasonable amount of compost to get you there.

Drainage can make a BIG difference. Pumpkins don't like wet feet. I dug drainage ditches and used the spoil to raise my growing beds. I did the digging through the patch with a shovel, then went around it with a skid loader.

I posted the photos of the standing water already at the garden plots.

I was also above grade by 8 to 10 inches... was tough to rototill at the edge of the curb... but I just stepped into the street

I looked up the soils map of your garden and sent you some information. If your plot is on the east side, it looks real wet.

Thanks Mark! We are on the west side, but drainage has only improved some since we did two 36 cf hauls of aged compost in the past 7 seasons. I will definitely use the tool you mentioned.
