I live in rural Ohio and have plenty of opportunities to get manure, unfortunately nothing that I have come across is aged. I just moved to this house in December, and to be honest I am new to not only pumpkin growing, but gardening in general. Is the store bought manure any good? I'd like to start working on my beds outside a little bit, since we are going to have nicer weather today.

The best I found is Black Kow if it is available in your area

I know it has nothing to do with your manure inquiry, but it sounds like you got hit by the growing bug (re: your diary entry #1). I am associated with the group which runs the Hamilton weigh-off and invite you to visit or website at sogpg.com and our Facebook page under Southern Ohio Giant Pumpkin Growers Association. Hope to see you this fall at Operation Pumpkin.

Welcome to giant pumpkin growing. The first year I used bagged composted manure from the garden store. Living in the city, I had no access to anything else. That year I had reasonable results but after that, I started to worry about the chance of introducing disease and the chance of anaerobic bacteria to multiply in the closed bags. I would suggest that the first thing you do is to get a soil test done. That way you know what you are working with to begin with before trying to modify it. Good luck this year. Hope you will be another of the 1st year super growers.

Trucktech, I liked the page on Facebook and was actually just looking through the website. We will come to Hamilton even if we don't grow a big pumpkin. It's a fun time and too close to miss. :)

Thank you Hank, I will look around and see if I can find that here. Bnot, thank you for the advice. I am also going to ask around some more and see if I can find any that has been aged.

Welcome, sometimes new soil that hasn't been used over and over can be very productive. I'd get a soil test before adding a bunch of stuff.

I will see if I can get one done. I look a little bit and it looks like there is a place not too far away.

Can you buy some dehydrated pelletized hen manure in any store or feed mill. Might be good

Smallmouth is right. New soil hasn't been depleted of nutrients. Soil test is important. If you have the room get... as much fresh manure as you think you can use and use it as compost for the future. I've used fall manure for 35 years with good results..but it comes with drawbacks ..cutworms...weeds..smell for a little while. Good Luck growing. Welcome to the site. T

Store bought manure is most of the time low in nutrients.

Here in Illinois, I use the University of Illinois Extension and it has helped a lot!
