I will be growing two plants, patch will be 30X60. I was thinking of planting them in the middle growing away from each other. Going this route how much distance between plants? Would it be better to plant them on the edge and grow toward the middle? What would you do?

I would come in 15ft from each side of your 60ft length. Place your plants there and grow to the end of your 30ft width. ---------------------------------------------------- | 60ft | | | | 30ft | | | | 15ft P 30ft P 15ft |

I agree with Hobbit. Let's see if my diagram comes out any better |-15'-X-30'-X-15'| The X's are the plants, place them on one side and grow to the other. Your main vines could would have room to grow 30'

Thanks for posting. I understand what you guys are saying. How large is the root growth around the stump? My thought process was to have them in the middle growing out so that 380 degrees around the stump the roots are growing through amended soil. If I plant them on the edge only 50% of the main roots are growing in the amended soil. Maybe this is a non issue? Does most of the growth come from the secondary roots?

I'm planting mine about 6-8 feet apart in the middle of my patch and growing them away from each other.

If you grow back to back this tear, switch to growing from the end towards each other next year. Rotate your planting spots so you don't have the crown roots in the same place 2 years in a row. Remember that you can't remove all the roots for disease prevention like you can do with vines.

In this scenario, consider growing back to back. Possible advantages: one overhead sprinkler, one mainline for drip tape, one main walkway to base of both plants, base vines shade out weeds between plants, operating equipment from outside growing area, and mistblowing w/o walking between plants.
