Hi everyone I am a new AG grower this year. I grew from generic seeds this year with very limited results so have been reading as much as possible here and other sites. I was wondering if it is a good idea to locate seeds as near to your geographic area as possible. Seeds seem to adapt to their local areas as they grow from generation to generation. I have some great seeds I have purchased for next year but was wondering if it might be a good idea to locate some local ones as well thanks.

Oh boy...you dun stepped in it now...there are tons of great growers in Illinois..im sure they will pipe in soon...and as long as you'll be out there working you might as well consider a few giant tomato, and sunflower plants...I have seeds for you if you would like...email me...and good luck...don't say I didn't warn you

And also... Using generic seeds is a mistake if you ask me...lots of great seeds will be offered here in the fall...and seed auctions all winter long...learn all you can

Thank you I will email you. I grow nice big slicing tomatoes and have a few sunflowers growing currently so that would fit in well. I was already thinking about looking into giant tomatoes and giant sunflowers would be very interesting.

I had about a small pickup truck load of seeds given to me this year and it had some packs of AG generic seeds so planted them and some other types of pumpkins this year. Then the "big" pumpkin bug bit and here I am lol. First year growing pumpkins but have been gardening for 40 years.

Already am having fun been lurking around here for about a week reading as much as I could. I had fun with those generic ones I planted this year. AG's are very durable plants considering the abuse it got from all my newbie mistakes lol. Already working on the main planting area for next year.

VV, wait a lil while after the major weigh-offs are completed (1st Saturday in Oct.) & then wait a few weeks till the seeds from these monsters are harvested & dried. Continue doing research & then look on seed exchange board...many incredible seeds will be available. Also, if you find some particular monster that you can't live without...seed auctions start in the late fall/early winter...these are live auctions w/ incredible diversity. Top notch seeds take deep pockets, or wide wallets...but don't let that stop you from bidding...the $'s from these auctions go to supporting a club or weigh-off site!!!! Peace, Wayne

Welcome virtual. I'm relatively new at this hobby myself. Last year was my first year. Your in very good company with the growers on BP. They have been more than helpful in every way. Anything that can be learned about growing Giant pumpkins is right here. Should you run into any problems get on this site and ask for help. The growers here are more than willing to guide you in the right direction.

This year I am growing a giant squash that is now over 300lbs and is almost 9' in circumstance, I have never grown a squash this big before could be my biggest fruit I've ever grown if it keeps on growing.
