I want to try it this year in one patch. Do you wait until the pumpkin is a certain size or do you start eariler. Primary or secondary vines and how deep? Thanks, Rick

Some say yes some say a no no. If you have very poor drainage I would not bury intire vine just bury at leaf node. I do bury mine but later in season my vine get washed off and are exposed. Some bury all some don't bury thier main and bury secondary. So they can check over thier main for bad spots. Some just bury at leaf node so root can get established. And some use pots over each leaf node. Far as how deep. I usually bury. Just enough to cover vine. And a pile over each node. Hope someone else will chime in that has better knowledge then me lol

you could also go to 'Grower Diaries' from the main menu top left and pick several of the lengthier ones and study how anyone with a 1500-plusser did it; that'd give you a project, a reference and a visual of it all. I'M one 2 talk, as i START 'mounding' the vines (just covering the ROOT NODE at the base of each leaf), but, i always find a reason to not continue...first reason this year? left my shovel in the woods somewhere; probably have to buy a new one, but it'll be FOR vine-mounding! hell, i'll 'design' one --- i'd have doubled my weights by now, lol---eg

I’ve heard of people burying all there vines and then taking off the dirt on the main vines once they get a pumpkin so that the roots are still there but they can see the vine

I bury the whole vine due to high insect problems like: svbs, squash bugs, etc.

I bury just the leaf node. Shoot me an email Rick, we are pretty close to each other. Unless there is another Hopedale I don't know about. Jeffspumpkins at Gmail.com
