Do the secondary vines on both sides of the main need to be of similar length to have a symmetrical pumpkin? If you have 10' vines on one side and 20' vines on the other, will this lead to a misshapen pumpkin? What if you grow vines only on one side?

Nope...doesn’t matter...growing vines on one side is called “flag” pattern...dunno of anyone growing that way that’s getting good results though...14-16’ on each side is a good target to go for...good luck!..

I agree with Porkchop, vine length has no impact on the shape of the pumpkin at all. Watch out for female flowers that are not uniform in shape (the stigma and ovary) . Chances are much better that they will produce a misshapen pumpkin. Even a nice symmetrical flower is still no guarantee it will have a nice shape. Genetics play a role in shape too.

Long and short vines will just make the plant an odd shape.
