Posted this on pests, diseases and other problems, and did not get a response so I posted this here, I planted a pumpkin outside, and It was looking happy, but then it was drooping and it's leaves were yellowing. I looked at the base of the pumpkin plant, and saw a split, going lengthwise with the vine, for 2.5 to 3 inches. i did not have a replacement for the pumpkin, so I wanted to know how to save it.

That won't hurt anything as long as it is going with the grain. Across the grain and into the vascular system is not good at this stage. The wind does this

I can see the hollow part of the inside of the stem but it is going with the grain. Also, should I bury it or bind it? I have heard if people using old cloths, or strips from a t shirt, and wraping them around the stem, and the stem healing. Also, would burying the vine make it more suseptible to rot?

It needs air to build a callus. Keep it dry and don't bury it. Use a fan or a cover if you need to and it should be fine. Good Luck

The split doesnt explain the yellowing or drooping. It should be allowed to heal keep water off I think if water doesnt pool into the hole/split then the growth should be every bit as good as if it did not split.

Okay thanks, the split is not buried, and it should stay mostly dry, and it is also possible that the leaves don't look to good, because of the slightly cooler temperatures there have been the past few days.

Do you have all the warmth protections in place?...cables, hoophouse, heat lamp or heater?....I’ve got some of that stuff and I’m still to afraid to plant outside..aren’t you further north?...Still not too late to start over and hit 1000lbs

I do have a cold frame that is double walled of double plastic, and I leave it closed most of the time. Do you think it would be a good idea to start another one now, or just let it grow, and see whay happens? I could start a number of different seeds, that have good genetics, because I got a seed pack from a pumpkin club.

I say both. Leave the one, start another and find out how much quicker they will grow when the temps are where they need to be...be very careful about leaving hoophouses closed when the sun comes out. Good luck!!

I do have a 216 and 199 of my own seeds, that are growing okay inside, and I will probably use one of them, but I don't know how to know when the planted one is looking to bad, and should be replaced.

I'd start some more as insurance. Never hurts to have a backup plan.
