On the stump of my pumpkin, the first 2-3 nodes are all withing 6 inches of each other and have little short secondaries starting out from them. The next secondaries, normally spaced at a foot or so apart, are all 8-12 inches long or more. Should I prune the little shorties?

You might let a couple of those ''shorties '"develop if theres room for them to root and space for the leaves. They can be trained strait back from the stump. If no room then prune some or all.I'm of the opinion that those first vines are less important than the vines closer to the pumpkin as a pruning strategy for feeding that pumpkin
