Engel's Great Pumpkins and Carvings

Menomonie, WI (mail@gr8pumpkin.net)

I will start off with My "MARGO" who was 1374 which is a 359 Foss x 1048 Engel. The 359 was a 1048 Engel x 2009 Wallace. My "ENVY" 1048 was a 777 young time self.

Shannon I'm somewhat biased but MARGO sure was a nice pretty
pumpkin and worthy of it's place in a string of HD winners.
It sure was a crowd pleaser.

She needed a Bodyguard or those kids would have tore her to pieces. We need to do something about that in 2015.

I'm sold on the 359 Foss which I why I have 2 now. I also bought a 1420 Cutrupi which has grown 1380+ HD in Italy. It was a beauty. I hope to cross them "next year" for size and orange.

I should have my 1738 posted in the next few days. It was the Howard Dill winner at Sturgeon Bay. 11% heavy.

I think the 575 wolf is about as good as it gets, 811 x 1059.

Mine is not a cross of 2014, it's my own cross of 2013. Yes, I grew a HD winner on my own seed. If you are ready for a mini-lecture, for the first time I feel like I have some "rationale" for this cross. Let explain, wait there is no time. Let me sum up.

In 2013 I grew the 608 Olilla (1059 X self) and crossed it with the 1432 Northrup. I had a SERIOUS hail storm that year which damaged my mains on each plant. On another plant the main vine was terminated! (It was bad.) On the Northrup, I could never get a pumpkin to set on the main. Eventually I grew a 409 pound pumpkin which was very orange, and no ribs to speak of. It started late and was picked at the end of Aug.

My 500.5 grown in 2013 has those "no rib" genes from the Northrup. Ribs, while beautiful,... my theory is that they cause the fruit to set it's shape early in the growing season, and as such it quits earlier than it should. Also, a lot of weight (to the tape) is lost with deep-ribbing. (You are measuring a lot of air!)

I like the Northrup genes in my 500, in that while I have some ribs for structure and beauty, they are not pronounced. It's a subtle observation, but it's there.

The other nice thing is that I have these seeds available. I particularly would like to trade with any orange grower. On the Howard Dill club diary there is a slight error. The pumpkin was only 11% light. ;-)

Oh you wait the 1374 Engel is a precise combination of several HD award winners, 359 Foss and 1048 Engel going back to the 777 Young, and the 993 V/M. Combined with a shiney 2009 Wallace. The 1374 Engel should have a better guarantee for a Howard Dill Award then the 1048 Engel. It is the perfect storm for orange.

There are so many sweet orange crosses. Our 759.5 was starting to go nice orange before we picked it for our early fair but I am going to try it next year as it is the 809 Young (777 Young x 811 Gerhardt) x 1059 VM.

We got the seeds out of the 575 - looks to be about 110 good ones.

If anyone is mainly interested in the 575, address the bubble pack to Amelia she will enjoy that.
