Aside from generic, Lowes etc. store bought seeds. Do you folks remember the first seed with a traceable genetic lineage that you planted? Any characteristics that stuck out?
I believe my first was the 845 Welty 03' (432 Welty x 1337 Houghton) The fruit was a soft orange and could have stunt doubled for the Planters Peanut Guy.

I grew several seeds from growers all over that Hugh Wiberg sent me when I started hosting a weigh-off in 2001. A Black seed sticks in my mind the most. 392# was what I grew, that's when the problem started(LOL). Before that just generic seed with my kids.

Several 07 Daletas and Companion seeds in 08 but the one that sticks out that year was a 1462 Gibson. I learned all about seed corn maggots. I killed the rest over the next 90 days. I'm still good at killing them!

Mark Muller from PA sent me seeds from his 669.5 Muller 05. Absolutely gorgeous, bright orange, round pumpkin. It was a selfed 603.5 Muller. BP "duffbeer" from CA sent me seeds from his 330 lb Prizewinner www.bigpumpkins.comDiary/DiaryOne.asp?eid=44079 I pollinated the Prizewinner with the 669.5, and grew a 150 pound pumpkin. I am still planting those seeds every year....growing 200 to 300 pound beauties!

My own 15 years ago, it turned out white and almost as tall as me. I prefer not to plant that seed anymore, it is expensive to grow.

A Giant Pumpkin seed from Gurneys back in 96. Went around 200-250 lbs. It took three of us to put it into a 1 cu yard wheel barrow, for which it got stuck in.... Got stolen off the porch by 4 HS football players within a week.

Joe, that's the story I heard too regarding the 897 Mcintyre. He just kept tilling as the plant and pumpkin got bigger. Ed. I think you have me confused with my growing buddy Steve " Judgehal"
