I am glad to see the 919 in there for older genetics. I grew it in 2008 http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=153262

I am a huge fan of the 1059 and it would be cool to cross that into the 919 Richards.

I'd grow both Richards seeds. I grew the 919 and it did not disappoint. Best of luck with whatever you pick.

The first year I grew I had a beautiful orange from the 924.5 Johnson.Since then I have been going for size and not color.I have seen some huge orange out there the last couple of years.I guess the question is What makes folks get interested so much in orange?I realize there is the Howard Dill award but does it take a special type of nut to only grow orange LOL?Let me in on the secret please fellas

Slim, at the end of the season at weigh offs, fairs and shows the crowds are drawn to the orange pumpkins. They believe pumpkins should be pretty and so do many growers.

Those who grow orange ask the same question...why would you grow big and ugly..Even though we are aware it is a weight contest, We like bringing the prettiest pumpkin to the ball

all run and take pictures with there kids around an orange

And if your single guy and your at a show with your orange pumpkin ,You will attract the good looken Ladies.

Do the Orange kins normally have white (light color)seeds? Just an observation of a few seeds I have. Is this a indication that it will produce a orange fruit?

Seed colour means very little in my opinion.

The only thing I can gauge from seed colour is that shiny tan coloured seeds can sometimes be trickier to germinate due to a thicker coating/inability of water to penetrate the seed.

I have several seeds from a kin I grew from the 1791 Holland [ Wallace 2009 x stelt]the kin did not do much 190 but that was from lack of experience I did self poll .I really like the genetics but unsure about using the seed this year I have germed several this year with almost 100% success will the seed have the chance of heavy weights with my kin only 190 ?

Yes it will. Imagine you had grown two pumpkins on the same plant...one 1400 lbs fruit (x self) and then some weeks later a little genetics fruit (x self) on a sidevine, because you had been so happy with the growth of your plant and pumpkin that you decided to harvest some more seeds of your "superplant x self" genetics. There will be the same genetic potential diversity in the seeds of the 1400 lbs and 200 lbs fruit. The only difference between their seeds arises from the different age of the seeds (different degree of maturity)...one of them might have have filled seeds or thicker seed shells than the other and therefore the start of the seedlings could be different.
Find out what the 50 Todd had produced. That´s one of the best examples that the size of the pumpkin doesn´t matter as long as you know why it had been that small although you are confident that the potential of the plant was much higher and you just couldn´t get the most out of it. The seeds store the genetic info, not the info of your rookie mistakes.

Good question benj ! I have noticed the same thing ! It seemed that all the strong orange colored seeds that i received were white seeds ? I wonder if any true green squash seed are white ? I know that seed color doesn't mean anything, but i wonder if that is a trait of deep orange pumpkins ?

Most of the orange out there has 567 mombert background which was a classic white seed. Some of that came through the 1370 rose whose orange was the 846 calai pollinator of its 1260 weir parent. That orange seemed to be dominant which produced bigger weights with a decent orange color. That's also one place that brown seed shells came in.

I have seen plenty of orange pumpkins come from thick tan seeds and I've had a handful of various thin white seeds to grow over the years. I can't recall a white seed ever not producing an orange fruit. So I look at it the same as yellow vine color- not required but a good sign. The seeds coming from the 1016 and 1230 daletas line are often thin and white. And the 772 piorier if I remember right. None of the seeds from my pumpkins are white and the vines are typically yellow and green striped.

Actually almost all of my seeds are white,, Being that I just grow for Orange,, My seeds are thick not thin.
