I crossed pollinated a couple kins that are now white but with great orange genetics into a couple with great orange. I'm guessing this genetic trait will be passed on and it will become luck of the draw on the seeds. I'm an orange grower and I don't want to save seeds that will throw white. Although a Large White Ghost should look awesome down in Town.

I hear ya.
I think if you add white its then 50/50 at best.
It may only be 25 percent chance that it would go very orange 25 orange 25 light orange and 25 it would stay white. It seems like sometimes orange can dominate completely though... I really dont have a good answer. . . just saying I'm in the same boat here.

I have one all white one and a few that showed a hint of orange early but will end up white. Which way do yours look?

Two very white..in my diary...Used them both as pollinators on nice orange and am afraid to use the seed in the future. for orange.

I once grew a white pumpkin with only hints of orange on a 713 Kurkowski seed. Every other 713 I know of was red orange. Stuff happens

The white appears to be recessive. But I suspect two different genetic whites. If it is a white from two orange parents it is recessive. So crossing with an orange will give all orange or half orange if the orange is a carrier. Doing experiments with whites this year. May come back looking for seeds from white that show white at maturity.

I think there are genes for white and opaque. Not sure which is recessive. But maybe opaque is dominant over all others... And that is why half the pumpkins are muted cream-blah. I hope you figure something out but there are a few other genes for color to sort out too like light pink, white/greens and light tan-orange?

The recessive white gene can hide in a very orange pumpkin... The opaque genes could not... They would hide vibrant green or orange color. So sometimes the opaque gene gets dropped and you get a stunner out of cream and white colored parents?

The key is that white x opaque/cream could reveal some nice recessive color but opaque/cream x opaque/cream could not. A small difference visually... but a big difference genetically! I think we are close to answering the original question?
Like there might be 0% chance his white ones would ever go orange if they are white x white and 50/50 if they are white x orange with recessive white. And 100% chance of orange if they are white x orange but then every offspring would have the white gene... It would show up again later...

I checked with the growers and one does have a tendancy to throw white but it's the other one that has me a little baffled...359 Foss x 2009 Wallace. Talked with Vt John this weekend when he stopped by and he's seen them turn from white in August to dark orange by the end of the season. In His 20 plus years of growing I'm sure he's seen a lot. We'll see what they look like in September. My season is generally over by mid Sept. Last year it was August 31. I'll take a Big White one...Will look good on the front lawn or down in Town.

The ''muted' gene is a dominant. It represses , reduces colour, in pumpkins and squash. I'm not sure what it does in double dosage.

Yes, the 2009 does have the recessive white gene. I have a couple from this line I'm trying. So far all the new pollinations show light yellow. Waiting to see how they shape up over time.
