I don't know that anyone knows the exact answer but I'd like to hear a educated guess on how many genes might go into the fruit trait geneome. Balpark ideas 10,50,200?

Tough question. I'm not aware of any studies in C. maxima looking at fruit wall thickness. It seems like there is continuous variation in wall thickness in AGS, which would suggest a more complex trait architecture (many genes of small effect), but it's hard to know if this variation is due to environment or genetics.

Yes the gene expression could vary due to many factors. Even the ones we call air bubbles are twice as thick as non-competitive maxima cultivars. So it looks like more than one gene... two at least directly... and maybe a dozen others, indirectly.
