I know 2019 seems to be the year of big and orange, but we often only hear about 1501, 2152, 1810, and others. Is there any seeds that produce big orange or you predict will that people are not even considering? I am just wondering cause there might be another miracle working nobody has tapped into yet.

Of the 2k group I know of none... Not even the 1501... That are 100% guaranteed to go orange. And some of the ugly ones CAN throw a beauty. Look at the one S. Sperry grew off the 2363!

I think the 1541 Groenewold 2018 has a good shot at being big and orange. Heavy parents and a good color and shape as well.

1475 Gorichanaz was one from a few years back. But there are plenty of newer ones that throw a lot of orange. The glossy orange in the Gantner is unusual. Check out Rea's diary for some ideas and Engel almost hit it out of the park on the 920 Cooper. Stelts and Werner have some to consider. 1789 Mendi and 2066 Geddes and 1803 Hoelke and 1937 Urena are ones I have considered for better-than-average orange genetics/progeny.

The 1927 Uhlmeyer was a nice pumpkin and it produced the 1742 Terry which was orange also.

1385 H/J was up for auction 15 buck min. and no bids and it grew the largest orange by OTT ever... 2106 Schmidt... still the largest by its dimensions. And it was a very nice orange. No bids! So yes we are passing some up. Its a fickle market. Can't plant them all. Kinda wish I had that one. But I did not think it would make my lineup and I've gotta draw the line somewhere. There's always the-one-that-got-away. Maybe next year...

I must of slept thru that 1385, been looking for one the last few years. Reed there are only a few growers that grow for orange only. Those that grow for the money always want the biggest pumpkin and occasionally get a big orange. However that pumpkin usually is crossed with one that isn't orange. You need to get seeds from a pumpkin with orange linage and cross that with another orange linage if you want to be almost sure each seed will produce orange. Than you need to make sure you have the shape.

There seems to be a good deal of orange in the 2145 progeny, which will probably help make big and orange more common as pumpkins like the 1501, 2152, and 2416 get propagated. In my opinion, the 1810 is the best big orange producer that isn't 2145 progeny, but it shares the 1756 parent.

Has anyone tried to look at the rate of orange production from different seeds? 2145 looks to have been about a 50-50 shot (though the quality of the orange varies), but I haven't gone through and counted. While there aren't a ton of seeds that have been grown much, much less have enough photos easily available. I'm curious the genetics of orange--are there multiple genes involved, or is there a single gene with incomplete dominance.

i wish i had gotten one, but i'm stingy and then regretful - 2255 Zaychkowsky - if not to be colorful, then, VERY heavy. Get a pen out, and mark my words. I will most-likely 'grow out' my 284 (1585 x 1385) to see Whazzup Wid It---eg

I agree with Bill. Hard to grow for orange and win weighoffs both. Sometimes people get lucky and get both but it is rare. I cannot make it to any weighoffs because of my fall pumpkin business but for me orange sells so that is what I grow. Is always a challenge to try to plant that one or two seeds that will give me a really big orange pumpkin. I try to plant at least 1-2 big orange seeds a year but I would say over half the time they don't give me that great orange color. Have planted two 1385.5's. First year I got a orange/white/green kin from it. Last year I got a really nice orange from it. You just never know.

There are also iffy orange seeds. They sometimes throw ugly, and sometimes throw a nice orange pumpkin. The orange growers watch and compare. Then decide. I am always looking for something to add to my orange, that is pretty and heavy.

I am giving the 1200 Engel another shot. I had one to 900# by Aug 1, on a pace to beat Don Young's state record when disease took it out. I have spots that were in mustard last year to grow them on.

If anyone else wants to help see what my 920 can or can't do here at the last minute, let me know. We know it has more kick to it that its 920 pound parent weight suggests (thank you Shannon) and it carried color, now we just need to see more examples of what it can do.
