Adirondack Mountains of N.Y.

We live in the Adirondack Mountains on NY. Its a short cold growing season at the best. I have started a giant pumpkin but need advice. So far there is a small pumpkin. what is the best way to keep it healthy, and force it to grow? this is the first time for this. thanks Al 1aberg1@verizon.net

Things I have learned after 2 years:

Dig a large nutrient pit ( 6 feet wide, 2-3 ft. deep)
Cover vines
soil test and then follow fert/lime guidelines
as much manure as possible (5-10 yards/plant)
bury vines
good watering system
