I need to buy a tiller, and was looking at either a motor powered walk behind one, or a 11 disc pull behind one for my riding lawn mower. Any ideas on what will do a better job? I need to break ground and then work compost and ammendments in.

pastor, those little disc for behind a lawn mower arent really much good for breaking ground unless you have really soft sandy soil. If you have the funds, a rear tine walk behind would be your best investment by far compared to a tiny disk imho.

I just bought a Husqvarna rear tine tiller this year. Its a 9 hp engine, with tines that turn forward and reverse. It worked great tilling up tall weeds in the garden. That is after I cut the weeds with a mower. One thing I have had trouble with is a Tecumseh engine..I would stay away from them..A Briggs and Stratton Engine is the best. I paid $699 for this tiller. Good luck.

If you have a small area your best option is to rent a Barreto or BCS.

Why are you tilling anyway? Is it really necessary? Have you looked into no-till gardening?

I have grass growing where I want to plant now. What is a Barreto or BCS? Is it a heavy duty roto-tiller, I'm assuming? Is it a brand or style?

BCS is probably the king of tillers, very expensive.

check to see if you have a sears outlet store near you. I bought a forward and reverse rotation last season for $499 and they were regularly 799. It had been brought back because the recoil start didnt work right. Not a flake of paint was off the tines and starts every pull now.

The King of Walk Behind Tillers is the Ferrari 72S.
