I did a lot of research and finally decided to get a Stihl. They are rated by users as much more dependable and less prone to breakdowns than other brands. Two of the top growers here in VT also have Stihl blowers.

There is a new model which just came out which is about $100-$150 more expensive than the older model. Buy the older model to save the bucks

Find a dealer near you: http://stihldealer.net/locator/

PS: Haven't had a chance to use mine yet. Bought it in October.

Just a heads-up to anyone who buys the Stihl: after a couple of years, you'll find it lacking power and eventually only able to idle. Don't be a dumba$$ like me and go straight to the carburetor. An engine has to breathe in AND breathe out. Pull the spark arrestor screen from the exhaust outlet right away. After a couple of years, it will become restricted with sludge and serves no real purpose except to satisfy the EPA.

BTW, the best investment I ever made relative to applying foliars and contact pesticides.

Joe, exacrtly, great post, the screen gets clogged and can be cleaned in a few mins.
Stihl SR420 is a great tool, I've had mine for 5 or 6 years now.

Thanks, Joe. Both Kevin Companion(pb 1378) and Mark Breznik(pb 1392)here in VT love their Stihl misters for foliars, pesticides, and fungicides. No more hands and knees stuff to spray under the leaves, and much better coverage.

I thought maybe he was asking about water misters. If so go to Tom's website, he some good stuff here at http://www.extremepumpkinstore.com/ecom-catshow/Irrigation.html
What he does not have listed just email him and he will either find it for you or let you know where to find it. Tom has got to be the best supplier about getting what you need or want.

I've had an SR420 for 8 years now and I have used it more than it was meant to be used...LOL Only problem I have ever had is plug in the air line to pressurize the tank.

I would say that mine has well over 1000 hours on it.

Stihl 450 is the newest model, you don't have to
change tanks for dry to liquid like the SR420 which
is no longer available from Stihl.
The 450 will be Stihl's flagship from now on.
The muffler screen just throw it away and your power
problems are solved, on line trimmers also,
a touch louder and you'll have more torque as well.

Craig,

Have you seen a blower/mister? If you have, then you've noted the tank on top of the Stihl models. A hose runs from the tank to a setting valve at the end of the air outlet. Depending on the setting(mine goes from 1 to 6), you can choose how finely your solution is atomized and go from fogging sized to wetting sized, depending on your needs. There is also a throttle trigger on the air pipe to control engine speed. A higher engine speed and lower solution setting results in a very fine mist(fog) which rolls nicely beneath the canopy during calmer wind conditions.

I have also used mine to apply pre-plant solution amendments such as liquid gypsum prior to tilling.

thanx for the reply joe , but if the cecondaries usually run 10 + ft and you have to reapply pesticide a number of times during the season how does this thing reach 10 plus feet in between the secondaries and spray up to cover under the leaves with out walking between the secondaries and compacting the roots? the pictures i,ve seen only have a short extension past the hand control?

Craig,,,the "wind" created by the blower rolls the leaves back nicely (you play with the finger throttle and flow adjustment to get the right touch) these units will actually mist out to 30'+,,with use of the wind conditions even farther. I mist from the back and front of the plants when everything is filled in and coverage is excellent.

I have also used mine in landscaping and misted trees over 30' tall. Mine is a Stihl and I've had no problems, I suggest using premium fuel and synthetic oil. After using one you'll find many applications around the yard/gardens.

Craig, a video is worth a 1000 words. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mi7_0A11RXg It's not a Stihl, but you will get the idea. Additional videos on right hand side of webpage.

The mist from the blower coats everything, top and bottom, and very quickly, too. You can probably do 4 plants in 5 minutes.

Question.. The solution is gravity feed to the mixing valve, if the wand is raised above the level of the tank for tree work , how dose it work ?

1/2/2011 8:29:13 PM

Pumpkin Shepherd

Georgetown, Ontario

Bill, a couple of answers for you...the tank is perched up pretty high so you likely wouldn't raise the nozzle end above the fluid level, also the weight of the liquid left in the tank is pushing down creating pressure and there is a venturi effect at the nozzle end from the air blowing past that creates some suction as well.

Where there's a Stihl, there's a way!!! I bought one of the old models 3 years ago...never used...in the box...eBay...I think for less than $300 dollars...well used since then!!! Ahab, it's basically a combination of a leaf blower, and a back pack sprayer!!! Which I am sure you know by now!!! Several folks on this site have made their own!!!! Search the site for misters & or foggers and you might be in the money!!! Peace, Wayne
