Excuse me if this sounds like a dumb idea but what about using Lobster and crab shells, grinding/crushing them up and putting them in a pumpkin patch. If seaweed and fish fertilizer is so good for the patch then wouldn't this be good also. Something like combining eggshells and fish all in one. I need some input before I go to the mananger at the local red lobster and do a nights free dishwashing to collect them.

Not dumb at all especially if you like cats (kidding). The shells will in time be broken down by bacteria to liberate the Calcium those shells are made from.

I went to a local crab processing plant and they were happy to give me several hundred pounds of shells to crush up and add to my patch....sure beats paying for it.

Good info at;

Damn, That's a great deal. Somehow I'm guessing there aren't any crab processing plants in Nebraska.

On the website provided by NS Boyz there is a mention of Neptunes Havest crabshell helping with fungus problems. What about Myco fungi? KathyT

Happy Raccoons...LOL...It's good to bury the carcases under some compost to keep the critters away & start the biology.

There are a few bagged dirt products that use clam and lobster shells for calcium. About $8 a bag in CT. I like the idea of acquiring the live ones for the steamer pot.

Fertrell has sold crab meal for years: A potent organic fertilizer derived from Blue Claw Crab after 40% of the crab meat has been removed. Shells are kiln dried and pulverized into a beige colored meal. NPK averages 5-2-5 while 13% natural calcium, which virtually eliminates blossom end rot in tomatoes and peppers. As a bonus it brings with this thirty trace elements and vitimins. I apply it mixed fifty fifty with corn meal as a side dressing at plus thirty days from planting the seedling and again at fortyfive days. On alternating years I use Fertrells 4-2-4 and Crab meal mixed fifty fifty for the same purpose.
