Looking for a good, longlasting source of Nitrogen, besides Cow manure.....I hear blood meal is not a long lasting source. Other ideas? or suggestions

Legume cover Crops. They fix nitrogen from the air and store it in the root zone in the form of nitrates.
Chilean Nitrate 16-0-0, high in sodium, usually used in small quantities.

I used alfalfa pellets this year. My plants didn't run out of gas as quickly this year. I think it was 1 of the reasons I went over 1000 this year.

46-0-0 is still the cheapest that the average grower can buy. Calcium Nitrate is better suited. Dried Blood is very pricey but is also good & repells some animals.

Yes...Dried blood is the most soluble of the natural organic N sources. This is a GOOD thing in the spring IF the soil is warm enough to get the biology working. We NEED the N to run out at fruit-set so a predictable end to the N cycle is desirable.

Another free product like blood and feathers is hair. If you know someone who cuts hair, you can get a lot of free N (and many other trace minerals) Takes a long time to break down in the soil, but does not rob the soil of N like leaves, etc.
