I know this has probally been asked a bunch of times but forgive me. I dont drink coffe and never had but I always hear about people adding coffe grounds in the fall and spring. Theres not many coffe shops around here and I dont mine buying them at a costco or what not but Im a bit confused. Do i just buy like the big folgers jugs and spread the coffee grinds in the patch? Or do I have to actually use the whole Coffee beans? Any help would be appreciated. In my worm bins I just dump Folgers in them and they seem to love it.

coffee is not cheap, the idea is free used coffee grounds from your local coffee shop or own coffe maker, you'd go broke using the new unused coffee.

If you have Starcucks nearby they have a company policy to give thier used grounds away. All you have to do it ask. I went in the spring and got like 100 plus pounds of the stuff. By the time I was down they knew me by name lol.

We dont have a starbucks but im gonna do some checking around. I asked one lady at the store if she would save them for me and she asked why. I told her its for my pumpkins the look on her face was priceless.

Jason, coffee grounds are great and worms love them and turn them into great castings.

Just try and large employer, factory, school, hopital, firehall or anywhere they either drink alot of coffee or serve alot of coffee.

Supply them with a nice new garbage can or container and most people are OK with throwing the used coffee grounds in there for you to use in your garden.

We've got a starbucks on just about every corner here where I live and they use more grounds than I could ever incorporate into my patch but I still add a few hundred pounds every year.

Thanks Glenn thats what I was thinking driving home since we dont have any starbucks around I was thinking of other means. Heck ill even tell them they can throw in the filters ill fish them out. I just gotta add searching for coffe grounds along with manure and leaves to my list...I swear our lives are growing Giant Pumpkins.

Hey Jason, use all of the coffee grounds you can get your hands on, filters and all. I put at least 1000 #'s of grounds /planting site, and will put more on this year. They are a great source of STERILE organic matter, and have a fair amount of NPK.

In Oregon, our Starbucks have a policy to hold them for gardeners until closing, then they are all tossed. Just ask the workers to save them for you. You get some funny looks.

I get mine at 7-11. I collect them for about 6 weeks in the fall until the snow flies, and then 6 more weeks in the early spring. I have to pick out the filters to keep my neighbors happy. 100 or so filters a day really adds up and I hate the mess they make, but they will break down in the soil. Another grower collects them from the local sugar beet plant. Lots of coffee drinkers there. Others get them from college cafeterias.
Yes, I get strange looks as well. Part of the hobby I guess LOL!

I get em from the 3 Starbucks around here as well. I am glad Thad 1524 Super Starr is not around to steal 'em all before I get to em. 1,000 per site? Whew... That is a lot of hauling. I think I only put 100 or so, but will do more next year.

I have loaded up 100's of pounds at a time from SB, but when you start putting it in the patch it doesnt look like as much. Worms come up and eat off the surface and the robins come and eat the worms......go figure.

go to your local restaurant, go at breakfast time, ask them to save all their grinds as well as egg shells, give em a bucket or two, and be willing to go daily to collect, or they will not save for you any more

I have 2 starbucks & a caribou coffee shop within a mile of me, I have gotten 10 pounds or so so far. The starbucks by me actually has a can that when they are done with the grounds they put them in the can for gardeners.

I've been adding Starbucks to my patch for about the past month. On their bags with spent coffee grounds that they leave at the door for free it says that the pH is 6.8 or 6.9. On their website it says that the grounds are acidic and need some lime applied if added directly to the garden. If the pH is 6.8 or 6.9, why would you need to add lime...sounds perfect to me?
