My patch is 1350 sq feet. I did put 10 pick u truck loads aged and fresh horse manure. Truck has 6 ft bed. Cover crop rye. This was a no till just taking shovel size samples. Use A&l labs
results. ph 7.2 p-572lb/acre very high k-840lb/acre very high ca 4886lbs acre optimum range mag 660lbs/acre low very high sulfur 52lb/acre low optimum range boron 2.8lbs/acre copper 9.8 albs/acre iron 420lbs/acre B,CU, FE are optimum range manganese 188/lb acre medium range zinc 27lbs/acre low very high range. sodium 70 lbs/acre

my cec was 13.3 meq/100gm %k7.6 %ca 72.6 %mg 19 %na 1.1

k:mg ratio 0.39 I thought about some sulfur to lower the ph some and raise the sulfur level. Any other ideas.

Hi Tim,

I wouldn't touch the pH, I'd say its perfect. Especially since you live in Western PA.

The base saturation %'s look great. The total amount of Ca, K, Mg I would say is a little low, but probably ok. The OM% and CEC is low. I would add some more OM, humic acid, kelp meal and calcium nitrate. I'm surprised the OM is that low by the sounds of how much you added. More OM and humic acid will help with the low CEC. I'd go with a couple inches of OM, 10-20 lbs of humic acid, 10-20 lbs Kelp and 5 lbs of calcium nitrate. With the lower OM, your soil will probably be a little low in N. Thats my .02

Thanks for the imput. I am still trying to get all this soil stuff down. A couple of questions. You suggested granular humic acid. I purchased the liquid 2years back. Is this ok to use and what woud the equivillant be or 10-20 lbs granular? You suggested 10-20 lbs kelp meal. I can get a 50 lb bag cheaper, but would the extra hurt?

The extra kelp meal will not hurt. You could put on 25 lbs and have enough for two seasons. Yes, you can use the liquid humic acid in place of granular. How much depends on the product. The only thing I can suggest there is to follow the directions on the package. If you have access to granular you could use both. It seems that you don't have to worry about over doing it with either humic acid or kelp meal. It comes down to a matter of how much you want to spend. That is one of the nice things about having a small patch.
