I got my heating cables for this year, just wondering how everyone uses and buries ther heaating cables?

I have never used them before but I believe 4-6 inches deep, about 10-12 inches apart in a spiral pattern.

Depth will depend on the type of soil you have. Bury them down to 18" or so to start with and work the soil before you put them in. Then wait a week and see what temps you have at the root zone, about 8 inches deep. May have to dig them back up if temps are not enough. Space them in a snake pattern back and forth across the area. I attach them to a metal weave with 8 inch squares on it.

I know I saw a Joel Holland video where he demonstrates burying a heating cable and he used a spiral pattern. I think it was "how to do stuff in the patch" from 2007?
He'd probably be happy to tell you how he does it if you emailed or called him.

I was assuming that the heating zone is 5-6 inches - that give 10-12 in apart. Depth - same general idea ... but I was thinking you'd want them an inch or so up to insure the soil at the surface was warm too. but maybe down an inch or so would be better since the soil below the cables is a cold sink and it would be harder to heat the 5-6 inches below that the 5-6 inches above?

Anyway what I posted is what I had remembered hearing and it made sense to me. I'm sure you could place them lots of different ways and still have them work.

I have used them for years and run a snake pattern through those circles around the stump area...so I move from a 2-d to a 3-D concept...better spreading of the warmth.
