I need to add more sand to my clay soil or I was wondering if any one used vermiculite or perlite instead. Any thoughts if this would be the way to go.

Darren I would use organic matter and if you want to you can add perlite or vermiculite to help with your soils porousity. (I use a little perlite in my planting holes.) I have read that sand and clay mixed can create a concrete like mess. Adding humus to your soil is the answer for both clay and sandy soils.

If you have a lot of clay in your soil, don't add sand. Big moon is right as it will make your soil hard. Best thing you can do for heavy clay soil is add organic matter. Do a web search and it will tell you why also

Vermiculite increases moisture retention. Perlite has low water retention.
Peat moss might be a better choice. Some garden supply businesses are having sales now on their remaining stock. Check around for the best price.
A truckload of compost would be another option.

Sand and clay make concrete, find something like organic matter. Also gypsum will help in breaking up clay. Your soil is what your soil is. Cover crop would also help break up your clay and depending on what cover crop will bring up nutrients. Good luck.

I just added a truck load of masonry sand to my patch. I tend to have big drainage issues I can see people's point on it hardening the soil but sand in addition to organic matter can only help especially when you have soil like mine.
