my cousin raised 3-4 hogs i offered to clean out his pen for the year now how long is it going to take for this to break down?

it depends on alot of things. Manure without bedding is stronger than with bedding. Manure that has been rained on will be weaker than manure from a covered structure. generally the smaller the animal the stronger the manure. poultry manure is stronger than hog or sheep manure which is stronger than horse or cow manure.

In general, you don't want to add more than 1 inch of fresh, 2 inches of aged (piled up outdoors for 6-12 months) or 4 inches of composted manure (no longer recognizable as manure) over the whole patch. Fresh should only be added in the fall, aged or composted can be added spring or fall.

The longer the manure is aged and the more it is broken down, the less fertilizer value it has. composted manure is more of a soil conditioner like peat moss than a fertilizer like blood meal. How you use it depends on what you want it to do.
