Hi all, I was wondering if you can add a few yards( maybe 4 to 6) yards of Sino hot horse manure that will be about 3 months old and mostly composted. I will be amending to a 320 Sf area with light clay. Is this a good idea? I'm also probly going to add about 5 yards of compost. Thanks!

You can do what ever you want to do...Ashton I have seen a lot of growers give you good advice and you simply chose not to listen. Add that much manure in 320sf and I can bet your soil becomes imbalanced. But again it it your soil

ok, thanks. Im listining to other growers, i really am. just wanted to check to see if that is to much to add to my soil. maybe 2 yds of manure and 4 yds of compost? thanks for the help!

pg3, Get a soil test first, find out what your soil needs then add to it. I'd put some on and compost the rest. You can use the compost to put on the vines when you bury them.

I dumped a thick layer of horse manure on a new garden spot in my yard this past season, on top of hard clay. It was never even tilled in. I grew a 228 pounds personal best watermelon and a 585 pounds pumpkin in my first year growing them in many years. I added only some gypsum and never even had the soil tested. I also had a raised bed for tomatoes that was pure horse manure and it grew some wonderful tomatoes. I am not recommending this method to you but only saying it yielded good results for me.

Each yard on 320 sq ft will end up being about 1" thick, if that is any help.

I don't understand? hot manure is fresh 3 month old manure wouldn't be that hot. Put an inch of chicken manure in the fall, that'll be all the manure you'll need. I used to put fresh horse manure on in fall but had disease issues, I use composted cow manure and the disease went away.
